As part of the Inclusive Social Security Policy Forum (ISSPF), the Tunisian Observatory of Economy co-organized with Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development and Developpement Pathways, a Regional Conference on Inclusive Social Security on September 19th and 20th in Amman, Jordan.
The conference aim to reach a collective working agenda for civil society organisations, experts and rights-holders in the MENA region around three themes:
- Role of International financial institutions,
- Poverty Targeting programs
- and Data accessibility
TOE led the first panel and a workshop on “The Role and impact of IFIs on inclusive social security policies in the MENA region”.
Speakers from Tunisia, Lebanon, and Morocco shared regional experiences highlighting the detrimental effects of IFIs on social protection. The session aimed to strategize collaborative resistances, with participants engaging in working groups focused on themes such as health, subsidies, targeted safety nets, pensions, and labor policies. Common findings included shared IFI recommendations across countries and issues with targeted safety nets, prompting a call for common research and advocacy agenda in MENA. The agenda that emerged from this workshop, as well as all the outputs of the conference have been transcribed in the final report of the conference.
